Chinese Herbs for Anxiety and Stress

Stress that will not switch off at night. A chest that feels tight for no
reason you can name. Irritability that arrives before you have had a chance to
be irritated by anything. If that is familiar, you are describing something
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been working with for a very long time.

At The Oriental Herb in Cliffside Park, we have been blending herbal
formulas for Bergen County residents since 1995. We do not sell a single
“anxiety formula” off a shelf, because in Chinese medicine two people with the
same worry rarely need the same herbs.

How Chinese medicine understands stress differently

Western medicine tends to treat anxiety as one condition with a few
standard treatments. Chinese medicine starts from a different question: not
what is this called, but what pattern is this person showing.

Two people both describing anxiety might present completely differently:

These patterns call for genuinely different herbs. This is why a generic
formula bought online so often does nothing — it may be a perfectly good
formula aimed at the wrong pattern.

Herbs traditionally used for stress and anxiety patterns

These are the herbs that appear most often in classical formulas for these
patterns. They are listed so you know what we work with — not as a
self-prescribing guide. Chinese herbs are used in combination, in proportions
matched to the person, and several interact with prescription medications.

What a consultation actually involves

About 45 minutes, and most of it is conversation.

  1. History — what you are experiencing, when it started, what
makes it better or worse, how you are sleeping, eating and digesting. The
digestive and sleep questions are not small talk; they are how the pattern
    gets identified.
  2. Pulse diagnosis — the pulse is read at three positions on
each wrist, assessing quality rather than just rate.
  3. Tongue diagnosis — colour, coating and shape, which in
    Chinese medicine reflect internal patterns.
  4. Your formula — blended for you from our dispensary,
dispensed either as traditional raw herbs for decoction or as extracted
tablets if you would rather not brew tea daily.
  5. Follow-up — formulas get adjusted. The first one is a
well-informed starting point, not a final answer, and we expect to refine it
once we see how you respond.

Honest expectations

Most people notice something within two to three weeks, usually in sleep
or digestion before mood. Chinese herbal medicine works gradually; anyone
promising same-week transformation is overselling.

It also works considerably better alongside the ordinary things — sleep at
consistent hours, daylight, movement, less caffeine after midday. We will talk
about those too, because herbs cannot outrun a schedule that is causing the
problem.

Important — please read this part

Chinese herbal medicine is used here to support wellbeing
during stress. It is not a treatment for a psychiatric condition and it is not
a substitute for mental health care.

If you are under the care of a doctor or therapist, stay under it. Herbs can
sit alongside that, and we will ask what you are taking because several Chinese
herbs interact meaningfully with antidepressants, sedatives and blood thinners
— this is exactly why self-prescribing from the internet is a poor idea.

If you are in crisis, please do not wait for an herbal
consultation.
Call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or go
to your nearest emergency room. That matters more than anything on this
page.

We will also tell you when we are not the right option. If what you
describe needs medical or psychological care, we will say so rather than sell
you a formula.
