Chinese Herbs for Memory, Focus and Brain Health

Written and reviewed by Dr. Michael Koh, Chinese herbal medicine practitioner at The Oriental Herb, Cliffside Park, NJ · Last reviewed November 2026

Walking into a room and forgetting why. Reading the same paragraph three times.
A fog that lifts by mid-morning on good days and never quite lifts on bad ones.
These are among the most common things people mention to us almost in passing, as
if they are not worth bringing up — and in Chinese medicine they very much are.

At The Oriental Herb in Cliffside Park we treat memory and concentration the way
the tradition does: not as a problem in the head alone, but as a sign of what the
rest of the body is — or is not — supplying to it.

How Chinese medicine understands the mind

Chinese medicine does not separate mind from body. Clear thinking depends on
three things: enough blood to nourish the brain, strong Kidney
essence
(which the tradition links directly to the brain, calling it the
“sea of marrow”), and the absence of phlegm or
dampness clouding the senses. Each produces a different kind of fog.

Herbs traditionally used for memory and focus

Listed so you know what we work with — not as a self-prescribing guide.
The right herb for a phlegm pattern is wrong for a deficiency pattern, and vice
versa.

What a consultation involves

About 45 minutes, and most of it is conversation.

  1. History — what you are experiencing, when it started, what
makes it better or worse, and how you are sleeping, eating and digesting.
  2. Pulse diagnosis — read at three positions on each wrist,
assessing quality rather than just rate.
  3. Tongue diagnosis — colour, coating and shape, which in
    Chinese medicine reflect internal patterns.
  4. Your formula — blended for you from our dispensary, as
traditional raw herbs for decoction or as extracted tablets if you would rather
    not brew tea daily.
  5. Follow-up — formulas get adjusted once we see how you
respond. The first one is a well-informed starting point, not a final answer.

Honest expectations

The phlegm-damp pattern often improves fastest — people describe the fog
lifting within two or three weeks. The deficiency patterns are slower and are
really about rebuilding; expect a couple of months. Sleep usually improves before
memory does, and that is a good early sign.

Herbs cannot outrun chronic sleep deprivation or a screen in front of your face
until midnight. We will talk about those too, because they are often most of the
problem.

Important — please read this part

Chinese herbal medicine is used here to support everyday mental
clarity. It is not a treatment for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or any
neurological condition, and it does not replace medical evaluation.

See a doctor first if memory problems are sudden, rapidly
worsening, affecting daily function, accompanied by confusion, personality change,
headaches or weakness, or if you are over 65 and concerned. Brain fog can also be a
sign of thyroid problems, anaemia, sleep apnoea, depression, or medication side
effects — all worth ruling out. We are happy to work alongside your doctor.
