Chinese Herbal Treatment for Mouth Ulcers

Written and reviewed by Dr. Michael Koh, Chinese herbal medicine practitioner at The Oriental Herb, Cliffside Park, NJ · Last reviewed November 2026

One ulcer is an annoyance. Ulcers that come back every few weeks, in crops,
for years, are something else — and they are one of the complaints where
people most often tell us “I’ve tried everything and nobody can tell me
why.”

Western medicine has few answers for recurrent mouth ulcers beyond numbing gels
and steroid pastes. Chinese medicine has treated them as a recognisable, patterned
condition for a very long time — and at The Oriental Herb in Cliffside Park
it is a problem we see regularly.

Why mouth ulcers keep coming back — the Chinese medicine view

In Chinese medicine the mouth reflects the state of the digestive system and the
Heart. An ulcer is understood as heat that has risen upward and surfaced in the
mouth. The useful question is where the heat is coming from, because the
answer determines the herbs.

Several are strongly cooling and are wrong for the deficiency patterns above.

What a consultation involves

About 45 minutes, and most of it is conversation.

  1. History — what you are experiencing, when it started, what
makes it better or worse, and how you are sleeping, eating and digesting.
  2. Pulse diagnosis — read at three positions on each wrist,
assessing quality rather than just rate.
  3. Tongue diagnosis — colour, coating and shape, which in
    Chinese medicine reflect internal patterns.
  4. Your formula — blended for you from our dispensary, as
traditional raw herbs for decoction or as extracted tablets if you would rather
    not brew tea daily.
  5. Follow-up — formulas get adjusted once we see how you
respond. The first one is a well-informed starting point, not a final answer.

Honest expectations

An active ulcer usually resolves faster than it would on its own — a few
days rather than a week or more. The real goal, though, is the recurrence,
and that takes longer: most people need two to three months of a well-matched
formula before the gaps between outbreaks lengthen noticeably.

Diet matters more here than for almost any other condition. We will go through
what tends to trigger your pattern specifically.

Important — please read this part

Chinese herbal medicine is used here to support the body during
recurring mouth ulcers. It is not a substitute for medical or dental diagnosis.

Some mouth sores need a doctor or dentist first: an ulcer that
has not healed in three weeks, one that is painless, a white or red patch that does
not wipe off, ulcers alongside fever or weight loss, or sores in someone who smokes
or drinks heavily. These need to be examined to rule out serious causes, and we
will tell you so.

Recurrent ulcers can also be a sign of nutritional deficiency (iron, B12, folate)
or conditions such as coeliac disease. If you have not had these checked, it is
worth doing — we are happy to work alongside your doctor.
