Best Chinese Herbal Teas for Anxiety and Stress Relief

Best Chinese Herbal Teas for Anxiety and Stress Relief – The Oriental Herb, Cliffside Park NJ

A warm cup of tea is the gentlest place to start with Chinese herbal medicine, and for mild, everyday anxiety it is often enough. Chinese herbal tea for anxiety is not one thing – it is a small family of flowers, fruits and roots that each calm the body in a slightly different way. Here are the ones we recommend most often at our Cliffside Park herb store, how to brew them, and when a tea is not enough and a proper formula is the better choice. For the full picture of how TCM treats anxiety, see our main guide to herbal remedies for anxiety and stress.

How Tea Calms Anxiety in TCM Terms

Chinese medicine sees most anxiety as either Liver Qi stagnation (tension, irritability, a tight chest), Heart Blood or Yin deficiency (palpitations, light sleep, worry), or heat disturbing the Heart (restlessness, a racing mind). Calming teas are chosen to match: aromatic flowers to move Qi, sweet fruits to nourish the Heart, and cooling flowers to clear heat.

Six Chinese Herbal Teas for Anxiety

1. Mei Gui Hua (Rose Bud) Tea

The classic tea for stress that sits in the chest and ribs. Rose moves Liver Qi, lifts mood and eases the sighing, PMS-type irritability of stagnation. Steep 5–6 dried buds in hot water for 5 minutes.

2. Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum) Tea

Cooling and light; for anxiety with a hot, flushed feeling, headaches or red eyes after screen work. Often combined with goji berries.

3. Suan Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed) Tea

The best-known TCM sleep herb. Lightly roasted and simmered, it nourishes Heart Blood and helps the worried, wakeful mind settle at night. Pairs well with our Chinese herbs for sleep guide.

4. Bai He (Lily Bulb) and Lian Zi (Lotus Seed) Tea

A traditional “calm the spirit” pairing, simmered 20 minutes; for restlessness, dry mouth and anxiety after illness or overwork.

5. He Huan Hua (Mimosa Flower) Tea

Known as the “happiness flower”; used for low mood with anxiety and poor sleep.

6. Da Zao (Jujube Date) and Longan Tea

Sweet, nourishing and gentle enough for daily use; builds Blood for the tired, anxious, easily startled person.

Brewing Tips

  • Flowers (rose, chrysanthemum, mimosa): steep 5 minutes in water just off the boil; do not boil.
  • Seeds, bulbs and fruits (jujube seed, lily bulb, dates): simmer 15–20 minutes.
  • Drink warm, in the afternoon or evening; avoid adding sugar.
  • Two to three cups a day for two to three weeks is a fair trial.

When Tea Is Not Enough

Teas are mild by design. If anxiety is affecting sleep, work or appetite most days, a prescribed formula such as Xiao Yao San, Gui Pi Tang or Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan works at a much deeper level – read about them on our anxiety and stress page. Panic attacks, chest pain or thoughts of self-harm need medical care, not tea. Tell your herbalist about any antidepressant or sedative you take.
